Oscar Review

As we all know, yesterday was the 82nd annual Oscars, and it was a big night. For us film makers, it's like our Superbowl; when the person we want to win, wins... it's like a touchdown for us. As far as I'm concerned the academy did a fairly good job and I believe most of the awards given were well deserved by the recipients. First and foremost, history was made when Katherine Bigelow won the Oscar for best directing, making her the first female to do so. Although I would have liked to have been that person, congratulations to her, it was well deserved. I'm glad Sandra Bullock won best actress, who would have ever thought, apparently not her. In my opinion, the best part of the night was not who won, but who didn't. The most arrogant man on the planet, James Cameron got a big goose egg by not only not winning best director, but also not winning best picture. While Avatar did take home a few Oscars, James Cameron did not, and his ex wife (Katherine Bigelow) even had a better seat than him. Precious, in my opinion, the best film of the year took home a few well deserved Oscars as well. One of those Oscars, best supporting actress, Mo'nique gave one of the most chilling performances I have ever seen. Speaking of Mo'nique, she said probably the most profound statement the entire night which was "I would like to thank the Academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics." Had Avatar won best picture/director it would have proved that it's all about politics... so as far as I am concerned I still have faith in the academy. Although I would have liked to see Quentin Tarantino take home an Oscar, this year was not his year. I still believe in him and know that he will one day get a well deserved Oscar; hey it took Martin Scorsese 30+ years to win his first Oscar. Rachel McAdams, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, Sandra Bullock, Gabourey Sidibe, Meryl Streep among many others all looked fabulous last night. My one major issue with the Academy awards is that they are lacking the level of classiness/ sophistication that it once had. Lets bring it back people.
